Review: Avene Thermal Spring Water

As promised, here is a review of Avene's Thermal Spring Water, otherwise also known as Avène Eau Thermale (oh how I love the French language). A very simple product, but essentially it is water in a can with a multitude of uses and is suitable for sensitive skin types.

I've longed for this product for quite a long time but never really justified spending $10.95 for a 50mL can of water (other sizes include 150mL for $18.95 and 300mL for $23.95)! However thanks to Beautyheaven's Beautorium I managed to get a small can of the popular spring water.

I was going to go on about the history of Avene and why its spring water is so good, but instead of boring you with information you can easily Google, I'll get on to the review. Avene's Thermal Spring Water is sourced directly from the Avene Thermal springs and has a low mineral content, a neutral pH and a high proportion of precious trace elements such as silica. So that's all the facts listed down, but what does it actually do?

Great thing about the Thermal Spring Water is that it can comfort skin irritations (such as sunburn, eczema, itching, facial redness, razor burn or even after surgeries- which I assume mean facial cosmetic surgeries) as well as toning, and generally refreshing the face especially during hot days and while travelling. Having dry and irritated skin at times, I find that this spring water spray works a charm. The mist is beautiful, probably the best mist I've tried- don't you just hate ones that squirt at your face? It was extremely refreshing and a joy to use, and I found it perfect for these past hot days (37 degrees anyone?).

Despite it being quite a fun product to use and giving me a fresh pick-up when I need to, I do find the price of Avene Thermal Spring Water a little on the expensive side, especially for something that is "just" water. I would love to be able to compare prices and quality to another spring water spray though, but the only one I can think of from the top of my head is Evian's Facial Spray which I don't think is readily stocked here in Australia. Give me a bit of time, and I might eventually get my hands on a bottle (hooray for online shopping) and then I can compare.

Do you use Avene's Thermal Spring Water? Do you think it is actually worth its price?

  1. Oh wow...I may have been living under a rock because I've not heard of this before, but I find it so bizarre that it is just water in a can. Though it sounds like it's pretty good, I think I might save my cash for things like lipsticks :)

    1. Yes you must be living under a rock as this Avene spray is quite popular, you can even get it at Priceline :) I don't think it's worth the price either and I'll rather spend on something else too!

  2. My friend was going on and on about how amazing this product was but I still haven't tried it yet. Like you, I can't justify spending all that money on a can of water lol.

  3. Hmm, if you put it that way, maybe I don't want this anymore haha if it is really just water. It does sound nice though, I use a similar one by a brand called DMK that I need to use with my moisturizers and it probably does the same job. Great review x

  4. I purchased the full size after realizing that this was actually a skin savior!! - I had a bad reaction on holiday and within three days this had cleared my skin and all the nasty redness :) x

  5. My mother uses it. But I think it's too expensive for just water.

However all of the products for my skin routine is from Avène. They have really great products for sensitive skins.

  7. I used this when I got sunburned on my feet back in the holidays, LOL :3 really liked it, I couldn't stop using it to calm down my irritated burned skin >o< it is a bit weird because my body doesn't get sunburned but my feet does >.>

    1. That is an incredible bargain! I might go have a look next time I am there- my pharmacy doesn't sell Avene which sucks :(

  9. I've been using this for over a year now and I'm addicted to it! I try and buy when there's a special at Priceline so I'm not paying exorbitant amounts of money for what like you said is essentially plain water. I've tried the La Roche Posay one and I liked it except the spray was horrible and didn't 'mist' the skin like this one does. Next on my list to try is Uriage :)

    1. I love it too as it is so refreshing and really soothes skin like a charm! It is a bit pricey though but I agree- getting it on special is good :) I absolutely adore the mist on the Avene spray, it is just a beautiful mist that spreads out very evenly. I still really want to try the Evian one next!

  11. I love this. It's so refreshing and calms my skin. I keep mine in the fridge. It makes it 1000 times better, especially in this Adelaide heatwave.

    1. Keeping it in the fridge is a great idea! It would feel really refreshing... damn and the weather here in Melbourne isn't so kind either, we've had 9 days in a row of temperatures above 30!

  12. I actually have the Evian one, I picked it up at David Jones!

I'm with you...I'm not really sure if it's worthwhile paying that much for water in an aerosol can. I think I'd rather go with the Jurlique rosewater mist!

  13. I love this and I don't care if it's "just water in a can" :p I think its versatility and how soothing it is and the amazing nozzle which disperses such a fine mist is what makes it worth it. I did buy 2 large cans from Chemist Warehouse a while ago for $20 - such a bargain! Though I like the 50ml for my handbag. I think another brand that does something similar apart from Evian is La Roche-Posay :)

  14. I have the Vichy Thermal Spa Water and I'm on the "it's just water" camp. Since I don't have sensitive skin it doesn't do anything for me. I prefer a toner or a beauty mist like the Caudalie Beauty Elixir.
Your blog is so lovely. You have beautiful pictures xx

  16. I really like this, but I do agree with you, it is only water in a can. However it is very calming when my skin is feeling very red and sensitive.

  17. I received this in a beauty box and I did really like it but as you say it is a bit expensive for what it is :)

  18. I definitely agree with it being pricey and that's why I probably wouldn't buy it unless it was on sale. BUT I still haven't tried this and would love to!

And omgsh, this would have been perfect for today... it was sooooo hot!

  24. I absolutely love this stuff! If you are on vacation (like I was last summer in NYC, with the sweltering heat), spraying this on your face or down your neck is a godsend throughout the day. I also like priming my face with this before I apply my foundation for a smoother application since I have dry skin. In my humble opinion, it's totally worth the money and lasts forever!

  25. I think the Evian Facial Spray is nothing special. It's just water in a bottle!

The Avene's Thermal Spring Water sounds like a wonderful product! I'll probably look into it after I finish my MAC Fix+!

  26. A brand my mother swear by and something I've tried too before, personally I wouldn't use a spring water spray of any sorts because if Im going for a spray I'd love to get my hands on an UD make up lasting spray! I think it wont do much for me, I don't feel a need for refreshing my face throughout the day, just patting away sweat when needed and touching up.

    1. Fair enough! This spray is probably best with those with sensitive and irritated skin, in which this case it'll calm and soothe :)

  32. İt is said that mineral water, especially in these summer days, is good for the face for both freshening and its quality. But i wanted to ask whether these Mineral waters we buy from the markets would also be useful if they were to be sprayed without the acid?
