Review: Bioderma Sensibio H2O

It would be a sin to be a beauty blogger and not know of the famous Bioderma Sensibio (or Crealine) H2O Micelle Solution. This French water-like gentle solution is a cleanser and makeup remover in one, adored and labelled by many as their "holy grail" product for removing makeup. You could see why I wanted a piece of its action! While Sasa had a free shipping offer, I quickly went to place the Crealine H2O in my online shopping basket, however it was out of stock so I went for the Sensibio H2O, which is the newer, re-branded name for the Crealine. I don't think I had ever been so excited to remove my makeup until I had this bottle of Bioderma in my hands!

I purchased this large 500mL bottle of Bioderma Sensibio H2O for $30 which I think was a great price, seeing as a 250mL is sold in selected pharmacies for the same price! Touted for its gentleness on sensitive and intolerant skin, this fragrance-free micellar solution is described as being able to capture and emulsify fatty molecules (such as makeup, dirt and oil) while maintaining the skin's natural balance.

Many have raved about how easily it removed heavy eye makeup in one swipe, and a general consensus was that it was extremely gentle on the eyes as well as having minimal residue left over- which is great as Bioderma claims that there is no need to rinse after cleansing with the Sensibio H2O. However I did come across a couple of reviews where people were disappointed with how well this micellar performed in removing waterproof eye makeup- but Bioderma does say it only removes "water-resistant" makeup... whatever that is! So I kept this in mind while I removed my waterproof eye makeup.

MUA Heaven and Earth palette, L'Oreal Studio Secrets Eye Pencil, Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner
I did a few swatches of the eyeshadows from my MUA Heaven and Earth palette (I might review this in the future) and a couple of eyeliners- with the one on the bottom being the waterproof Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner. I soaked a cotton pad with some Sensibio H2O, and swiped twice on my arm. The micellar solution resembles a slightly viscous water which is indeed gentle and felt refreshing and cooling on my skin- I found this excellent for using on the eyes. However I was actually one of the few people to be underwhelmed by its ability to remove eye makeup, if you look carefully you can still see traces of makeup on my arm!

Further swipes managed to get most makeup off, however the waterproof Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner was quite stubborn and refused to completely budge! A quick swipe with my beloved Lacura Bi-Phase eye makeup remover (from Aldi, which I cannot find anymore) removed the stubborn makeup easily, albeit with a slight oily residue. I highly recommend using a bi-phase (oil and water emulsion) makeup remover to remove waterproof makeup instead of the Bioderma Sensibio H2O.

However not all hope is lost in the popular Bioderma Sensibio H2O- I found this to be excellent at cleaning face makeup. The one area on my forehead prone to breakouts was improved greatly after using this to clean my face properly, and I found it such a joy to use as it was so gentle and calming on the skin. Despite not being able to remove waterproof makeup, the Sensibio does work wonderfully to remove light to moderate makeup. After using it a few more times, I have really appreciated the soothing properties of this French micellar solution and find it a staple in my skincare routine.

I really want to pick up a 50mL sample sized or 100mL travel sized bottle- they are absolutely adorable! However eBay was selling them for around $15 so I didn't find that they were worth it, even though they would be great for travelling with (not that I travel that often... but lugging around a 500mL is definitely not convenient). If anyone finds a better deal on the 100mL bottles, please tell me!

Overall I do like the Bioderma Sensibio H2O, although it isn't the best product for removing heavy eye makeup. It is definitely a product that is worth trying though!

What do you think of the Bioderma Sensibio/Crealine H20? What size bottle do you have?

  1. Bioderma pretty much works to remove everything on my face... it just requires a ton of cotton pads. I really love how gentle it is for my sensitive skin and eyes (:

    1. I love how gentle it is in the eyes too, especially for those with really sensitive skin!

  2. I agree that it's not the best with waterproof makeup! I don't like using this as a proper cleanser, rather I like to take it when I'm on the go or somewhere I don't have access to a bathroom if I desperately need to cleanse my face and re-apply makeup. It's fab for that. :)

    1. It definitely is a handy product to have on the go- no rinsing and it is so easy to remove the bulk of your makeup :) Such a shame it isn't the best with waterproof makeup though :(

  3. I really just want to try it out to see how good it really works on my skin! That is a downside though if it doesn't remove heavy eye makeup well, and it costs so much because then it really isn't a well-rounded product. This review was very helpful! Thanks! :)

    1. I think it'll work amazing on all skin types as it is so soothing and gentle :) Yeah it's not the best thing for heavy eye makeup- I agree that it doesn't make it worth its high price tag!

  5. I love Bioderma! :)

I've tried the original on my waterproof mascara and it did the trick, so perhaps it's just the Sensibio that doesn't work quite as well?

Either way it's a good cleanser, that's for sure! I normally use Lancome BiFacil for really stubborn waterproof makeup (I've run out of Bioderma but have the Sephora cleansing water to finish - also really fab), but I've heard lots of things about the Lacura so that's next on my list. I do prefer when my removers don't leave that oily feeling behind though!

    1. Nah the Sensibio is the exact same formulation, they just changed the name :) I've heard so many great things about the Lancome BiFacil but it is just so expensive :( The Lacura is great and is so affordable- although I haven't seen it around! One downside is that it does leave a residue but I don't mine rinsing as it works so well :)

    2. Actually they're 2 different products. Sensibio is for sensitve skin and doesn't list oil in the ingredients whereas Crealine does list oil in the ingredients and is said to remove makeup better. Sensibio is more so used as a cleansing water for the face and Crealine is marketed as a cleansing water for the eyes as well as face. In France, the Crealine is actually availble in 2 different formulas: H20 for normal to combination skin and TS H20 for dry to very dry skin.

  6. Rather than swiping, what I like to do is hold a cotton round drenched in the stuff against my eye for around 30 seconds. When I pull it away it seems to remove the majority of my makeup!

    1. That would work! I'll rather use a different eye makeup remover though that can get the job done quicker :) I love how it is so soothing though!

  7. This always sounds so good! I will definitely have to try it out one day, but I prefer the convenience of makeup wipes, and I always cleanse afterwards anyway. Glad to know it works better at removing facial makeup but I think it still has done a pretty good job at removing more "heavy duty" makeup... as Mishelle says holding it first would probably help, like with nail polish remover.
    Great post hun xx

    1. I had one bad experience with makeup wipes- they dried out like crazy and didn't remove anything! Albeit that was a cheap brand so I actually haven't given the better ones a go yet :) It is a great tip and I will try that the next time I use it!

  8. Great review! I have heard many raves about this product, but never brought myself to purchase it. I have been using jojoba oil as my makeup remover as well as my daily moisturizer and I find that it works best for me and water resistant or water proof makeup. ^___^b

    1. Ooh that's great! I once tried olive oil to remove eye makeup but it made my eyes blurry and it didn't end too well! But it definitely is a great natural and cheaper way to remove makeup :)

  9. I actually have Bioderma, and while I would say it's a lovely product, I couldn't say it lives up to the hype everybody claims it to be. Maybe because I've never had an issue with make-up removal, but to me, it's kind of on par with other make up removers to be honest!

    1. That's true! Since it was hyped so much I thought it would have been revolutionary in how it removes makeup, although I was disappointed with how it removed waterproof makeup which was a shame :(

  18. I really like Bioderma because of how great it is for sensitive skin and the area around your eyes. I find my face can withstand harsher cleaners so I rarely use Bioderma to remove face makeup (since it's kind of a precious commodity to me), but I don't use anything else for eye makeup removal (unless I'm in the shower and then I just use my normal Dove 2-in-1 or Foaming Makeup Remover). I agree it sometimes doesn't work as well to remove stubborn eye makeup, but I think it really just requires a bit more patience, like holding a cotton pad to your eye for a good 20-30 seconds before removing it. I generally don't have the patience for that though, so I just go over it a few times and rub (which I know is bad, but eh :p).

    1. I don't have the patience for holding a cotton pad to my eyes either- I'll rather use a different eye makeup remover which can do the job faster :) I use other cleansers but they just don't seem to remove every trace of dirt and makeup, and it's when I use the Bioderma on my face I really see everything come off which is great :)

  28. Bioderma still seems a little bit pricey for me. For all I know whilst it's great it's just a make-up remover. I use my L'Oreal micellar solution which works pretty well and I double-cleanse afterwards! The L'Oreal version is much cheaper (currently £3.30 at Boots) and works well too!
